What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy emphasizes the interrelationship between structure and function of the body. Osteopaths are functional anatomists who use hands-on approach of manual therapy.

They find the health, rather than focus on disease. Osteopathic treatment works to restore proper body mechanics, nerve impulses and the circulation of body fluids. Affecting all layers of the anatomy and physiology, improving overall functional movement through the body.

What to expect

What to expect in a Manual Osteopathic Treatment?

Manual Osteopathic Treatment by a Classical Osteopathic Manual Practitioner (M.OMSc.) is gentle, yet specific; treatments are focused on creating health within the body. Treatment may include, and not limited to working through all layers of tissue from the fascial, muscular, ligamentous and even bony layers. Treatment is pain free and calming to the body, working with the nervous system to find health (rather than disease) and creating lasting changes.

Principles of Osteopathic Manual Treatment:

  • The body is a dynamic unit of function (body, mind, and spirit)
  • Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated
  • The body is self-healing and self-regulating
  • Rational treatment is based on the understanding of these three principles

What is Osteopathic manipulative treatment?

Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) follows the theory that imbalances in the human structure contribute and are related to the development of disease.  We are trained to work exclusively without the use of drugs or surgery using manual methods for functional assessment and treatment. The interrelationship between anatomy and physiology is the foundation of osteopathic treatment.

Osteopaths recognize that the human body is self-regulating and self-healing and will strive for health if given a chance.

What does an Osteopath do?

Our role is to encourage the body’s reparative mechanisms though manual treatment to help the body remove any obstacles interfering with the proper nutrition and drainage of the body’s tissues.

Who can benefit from Osteopathy help?

Osteopathy can assist anyone desiring greater function, reduced pain and improved performance.

Osteopathy is suitable for all ages from newborns to older adults, including pre and postnatal women. Most commonly people visit for relief from: headaches and migraines, back pain and sciatic pain, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, frozen shoulder, muscle and joint pain, whiplash, muscle spasms, sport injuries, motor vehicle accidents, digestion difficulties (constipation or diarrhea), stress and anxiety, & much more!

What can I expect from the first session?

We discuss the reason you’ve come in, take a brief history and answer any questions you may have.  We start with a standing then seated then supine (face-up) assessment, all moving parts are gently assessed and treatment is applied only as needed to restore proper motion and circulation along the way. You are in full control of treatment and we work together to improve your symptoms and overall health.

How many sessions will be needed?

This is a difficult question to answer, as it depends on the individual. The healing process can be very quick or quite long depending on your constitution, vitality, environmental factors, and commitment both mentally and physically to healing.

I often recommend 6 treatments to see the biggest benefit of Osteopathic Care, the time between appointments will vary, often starting 5 days apart for the first few visits, and spreading out the treatment time as soon as possible to allow the body time to self-heal and self-regulate. Again, it all depends and the number of treatments required will always depend on each individual, no one is the same.

How long are the appointments?
The length of each appointment varies by your needs and body’s response to treatment in that given day. Initial appointments are booked on 45 min intervals and follow-up appointments are booked on 25 min intervals.

If you still have more questions, please send to and we will be happy to get back to you.
